William Priore C.P.G, L.P.G announces the award of Construction Management Contract to Strategic Sediment Solutions LLC for the multimillion dollar, 5 mile river Restoration and land protection project in Northern Indiana. We are very pleased and honored to win this important river restoration project says Priore, owner and President, of Strategic Sediment Solutions LLC.
This important and complex project involves the ecological Restoration of one of Indianas historic gravel bottom Small Mouth Bass rivers. Not only was historic fishery an important aspect, but the river did host nine species of fresh water Mussels including one of the states Special Concern species says Priore.
In 1998 the river received approximately 100,000 cubic yards of organic silt and fine sand was released from a dam and the upper reservoir. The riparian landowners sued in US District Court, where the case eventually resulted in a landmark ruling that sediment discharges from dams are regulated under the Federal Clean Water Act, including subsequent national adoption of the rule by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The suit was settled in the summer of 2011.
According to Priore this project is more unique than any other sediment removal project I have been involved in, with respect to access and the final objectives. My colleague, Darrell Nicholas, P.E. and I have been involved in the most complex contaminated sediment removal projects around world. The end goal for these projects was the removal of contaminated sediments. Together we have removed over 1.5 million cubic yards of these chemically challenged sediments. This project doesn’t include chemically challenged sediment, it does however involve removing fine grain sediments that are toxic to the habitat of the fish and mussels.
Priore went on to say, The final objective of this project is to remove the fine silts and sands that are clogging the interstitial pore spaces of the gravels. These pore spaces are important because they provide areas for fish spawning, macro-invertebrate habitat and provide an important conduit for groundwater to interface with surface water.
The challenge is to remove the fine grained material while leaving the important gravel in place says Priore. He went on to say an additional challenge to the river restoration activities is the wide swath of riparian corridor that exists on both sides of the river. This large riparian corridor is responsible for the rivers outstanding water clarity but presents challenges to the restoration efforts. We chose a unique technology to perform the restoration that accomplishes our objectives while has minimum impact to the riparian corridor. To date, we are very happy with the results. In all locations the technology has taken material that was classified as muddy sandy gravel to gravel.
According to Priore, Strategic Sediment Solutions LLC is not only charged with Construction Oversight but also spearheads the sampling, analysis, regulatory interface and grant application for the project.
