The Potomac River, described by several of the worlds best bass anglers in the country as one of the top-10 fisheries in the country, really showed her true colors Thursday as 123 of the 144 pro anglers in the Walmart FLW Tour on the Potomac River presented by the National Guard caught a five-bass limit on day one of the event.

Leading the pack was National Guard pro Scott Martin of Clewiston, Fla., who crossed the stage with a five-bass limit weighing 22 pounds, 10 ounces. Martin now holds a comfortable 4 pound, 6 ounce lead over Snickers pro Chris Baumgardner of Gastonia, N.C., and fellow National Guard pro Mark Rose of West Memphis, Ark., who each caught five bass weighing 18-4. The tournament features a field of anglers from all across the United States, Canada, Spain and Japan.

I ran about 40 miles total and hit about 15 spots, said Martin, who is the 2011 Forrest Wood Cup Champion. I was fishing some areas that had as many as 20 boats in there. The thing that made the difference for me today was that I was paying attention to the pressure that certain grass beds were getting. I would wait for the beds that I could see werent getting a lot of pressure to open up and was usually able to get a good bite out of them; thats how I got one of my 6-pounders.

Catching the first 6-pounder on one of my first casts this morning really set the pace for me today, Martin continued. I thought I had caught a catfish.

Martin indicated that the tide wasnt a do-or-die for his fishing on the Potomac. He said that he really wasnt doing anything special just casting and flipping. It was his attention to detail that paid off for him today. He keyed in on less-pressured flats with grass and said every cast was made with a purpose.

Martin said he used Bruiser Baits and flipping creature-type baits and said he figured out what color and bait action really attracted the bass.

Its always a good feeling to have a comfortable lead, Martin went on to say. I had a decent practice but didnt expect to catch 22-10 today. Ill go out tomorrow and try the same thing. Cover a lot of water and manage the tide as best I can and hopefully I can smack em again.

Both Baumgarder and Rose said they were fishing in high-traffic areas as well. According to Rose, 90 percent of the bass in the Potomac are in a small area and anglers just need to key in on specific spots in those areas and hope for the best. While Baumgarder was using chatterbaits and Zoom Speed worms, Rose said that he stuck to Strike Kings KVD 1.5 crankbaits.

Dudley Leads Walmart FLW Tour Major on Lake Champlain Presented by Chevy

PLATTSBURGH, Va. (PRWEB) June 28, 2012

The best professional bass anglers from all over the world began their four-day battle for a top cash award of up to $ 125,000 at the Walmart FLW Tour Major on Lake Champlain presented by Chevy on Thursday. Just a few short weeks after an incredible event on Kentucky Lake, the pros were anticipating a hot bite at the popular angler destination. Lake Champlain didnt disappoint them.

Castrol pro David Dudley of Lynchburg, Va., who went into the Champlain event with a one-point lead in the FLW Tour Angler of the Year race, weighed a five-bass limit for 24 pounds even to take the early lead in the tournament. Dudley now holds a 3-pound, 4-ounce lead over Walmart pro George Cochran of Hot Springs, Ark., and Snapple pro Jacob Powroznik of Prince George, Va., who both caught five bass weighing 20-12.

They were biting, Dudley said. Its Lake Champlain in June. They bite.

The lake was calm, Dudley added. Its Lake Champlain. You can go anywhere and do anything you want to do.

Dudley remained quiet about techniques he used during the first day of competition, but he did report he caught close to 30 keepers during the course of the day, 25 of which were keepers. When asked for his plan of attack on the second day, Dudley was quick to say he planned to repeat the plan he executed on day one.

Tharp Leads Wire-to-Wire, Wins Walmart FLW Tour on Lake Okeechobee Presented by Evinrude

EverStart pro Randall Tharp of Gardendale, Ala., had endured three days of tough weather and wind and managed to lead the first three days of competition at the Walmart FLW Tour on Lake Okeechobee presented by Evinrude. All he needed was one more solid days weight to claim his first FLW Tour title.

Tharp caught a five-bass limit weighing 23 pounds, 2 ounces Sunday to win $ 125,000 with a four-day catch of 20 bass weighing 101-12. The catch gave him the win by a massive 23-pound, 9-ounce margin over John Cox of Debary, Fla., who caught a total of 20 bass weighing 78-3 and earned $ 35,000. Tharps margin of victory broke the FLW Tour record set by National Guard pro Brett Hite (20-4, Lake Toho, 2008).

I felt like I could catch 30 pounds a day if I fished perfect, said Tharp, who adds an FLW title to his four BFL wins and one EverStart Series victory. I would have liked to have caught more, but Im pretty tickled with the way things turned out.

When I caught the first big one today and it put me at 19 (pounds) and I caught the second big one I didnt say anything, but when I caught the third one I knew it was over, Tharp added.

Tharp said the one constant during the tournament was the wind. High winds wreaked havoc on anglers plans as water clarity went south. Many anglers struggled to adapt and catch fish.

It was not what you want in south Florida, Tharp said. We had a wind chill of 27 degrees this morning. The winds were sustained 20 (miles per hour) with gusts to 40. The style I was fishing is what you need to do under those conditions.

And Tharps style of fishing just happened to be what he loves to do use a big rod, heavy line and big weights to flip grass. Tharp fished the north end of the lake and threw a black with blue flake Bitters Baits B.F.M. paired with a 1
