In an event that matches a golfers short-game acumen with a fly fishermens finesse, the first Golf Casting Tournament to be held in over 70 years is slated for the first quarter of 2012, says tournament promoter golfersadvice.com, a golf instructional, product and industry news website.

Its amazing how many golfers are also avid fisherman, and vise versa, said Dean Green, senior golf writer at golfersadvice.com. We were researching a story about golf tournaments of the 1930s, when we stumbled upon a story about a Golf Casting Tournament held in 1933. We did some more digging, and the concept sounded like so much fun, we decided to bring back the ancient event circa 2012.

According to Green, Golf Casting originated on the west coast, and was actually a popular event among fishermen who believed their casting prowess could easily match up with a perfect 9 iron from 150 yards or better. We havent run across any old footage from these events, said Green. But apparently, the tournaments were played on regulation golf courses, with participants casting a fishing plug (a type of lure) down the fairway from the tee box just as in a regular round of golf. Each cast considered a shot, just as in stroke play.

The newspaper accounts of these Golf Casting tournaments discuss drives of 300 feet and longer as routine using a rod and reel. Green said it wasnt uncommon for a fisherman to land a plug within a foot or two from the hole or in the cup from distances of 100 yards or more from the pin.

The idea seems like a natural, said Green, who is also a tournament bass angler. Our reader surveys show that 75 percent of our website audience, who visit the site for free golf tips, also fish at least six times a year. We thought why not bring the two groups together and see how theyd match up over 18 holes, just as they did decades ago. Since golfers have a clear advantage in terms of roll, the matches will be decided by the player who hits his or her shot, or cast, closest to the hole.

Green said that the similarities between golf and fishing have been written about… and discussed forever. Look, both sports can be extremely frustrating as well as provide unbelievable satisfaction, he said. For example, there are times youll make a perfect cast toward a rising trout, and hell just casually swim off, as if to mock your precise cast. There are also times when youll hit what appears to be the perfectly struck pitch shot, and it proceeds to spin right off the green and into an unplayable lie.

Green says that golfersadvice.com readers are invited to sign up for this unique, yet vintage tournament from the past. The only requirement is that every participant must declare in advance which camp theyll be representing fishermen or golfers, he said. As to which group Green expects to emerge victorious, hes playing it close to the vest for now. So many people have compared a golf swing to a fly fishermans cast, but I dont not going to get into that debate here. Certainly, any doubt about which sport produces the most consistent number of accurate shots or casts will be put to rest… at least at our tournament.
